You may well be correct about the wootz not being folded. My main point was that it was a single billet of steel, whereas modern "pattern welded" blades are made from two or more different types of steel (which may or may not be folded).

This is something I've never heard before, and I can't see how it could be
possible.
In order to be folded (i.e. welded), it would have to be heated beyond the
working range that would preserve the unique structure of Wootz, wouldn't
it?
