The wootz was folded, but it was a single type of steel.  But, in current usage, "pattern welded" usually refers to alternating layers of two (or more) different types of steel (e.g., high and low carbon, nickel, etc.).  Many current blade makers use "pattern welded" to distinguish their technique from the historic "Damascus" technique using wootz from a particular mine in India.  Of course many use the two terms interchangeably, which I think can be a little misleading, but it is common.

I don't know:  some of the comments were interesting:  Damascus steel is/was
not pattern welded?  The wootz was not folded?  That was news to me.
