Hey Pete,
Not really true, sure if you use the in expensive "solid state" phase
converters that are nothing but a few capacitors then this the result
you will get. But a properly sized and built rotary phase converter
will get you to at least 95% or better of the nameplate HP and an
inverter type converter like the VFD's are full name plate power
devices with the added bonus of speed control. So it all depends on
how you do it. For anything over 5HP you will probably be limited to
rotary types but they work fine and I have seen them up to 25 HP but
you will need one hell of a single phase circuit to run one of those :-)
