[TheForge] air hammer

I was just running a Kuhn at Carbondale a couple of weeks ago, the
first time I ever did any time on one, and frankly, I was not
impressed at all.
SIU has a 50kg Kuhn, an old one, probably at least 20 years old, and
it does not hit as hard, nor is it anywhere near as controllable, as
my 40Kg Anyang.
I will take the Anyang any day.
Anvil mass is probably part of it- my Anyang is an early import, that
is a two piece hammer, while most of the later Anyangs and small
Strikers are one piece hammers. Having a separate anvil is more work
to set it up, but much better in the long run, as the anvil to tup
ratio is always better on the two piece hammers. In hammers, like in
most tools, weight and mass really help.

And, considering the cost differential, you could probably get 3 of
the Anyangs for the cost of one Kuhn. Maybe 4.
Or TWO 75Kg/165lb Anyangs or Strikers, which, to me, is the ideal
size of a small shop hammer.

165lbs is enough to do a LOT of stuff. No, you cant run 4" square with
it.
But I find my 88lb hammer just tops out working about 1 1/2" or 2"
stainless- it just plain works as hard as it can, and doesnt quite
have the punch you wish it would. Mild in that size range is fine, but
stainless, I want more power.
Which is not to say I dont use it to work that stuff- I do, quite
often, but it just takes more heats.

I have played with a 2B and a 4 or 6B (been a while and I'm getting
slowly old). The Nazels are certainly second to none in quality of
construction and design. The control one can wield is remarkable.

As for Kuhns, etc., they are all good but I do not think they compare
with a Nazel in terms of ruggedness. IIRC, the Nazels were cast in
solid 4140, not cast iron. No fabricated air hammer will stand up to
the ab/use that a Nazel will.
