[TheForge] Aluminium

The way I remember them the Cannondale's are a 6000 series alloy. Most
likely 6061, but they might also be an auto alloy like 6013. They would be
heat-treated (solution heat treated after welding if I remember right).
Cannondale had some early problems with frame movement in heat treat but
learned how to deal with it.

At any rate you should not have any problems if you don't heat the frame.
You should be able to use a real high quality auto clear coat if you want
the bare metal look to show. Just make sure you metal is clean clean clean.
No finger prints or even hints of oil of any kind. Without a primer, you
may have retention problems, only way to know is to try it.

Dan Tull may have some ideas, he is a paint and aluminum guy in another
life.

While I worked for Alcoa for 32 years and built racing bikes for fun -- I
never build in aluminum -- always chrome moly tubing at the time. My at the
time, teenage son raced on one of my frames -- he still rides it and he is
now, 37.
