If you want to do this on the cheap, consider using scrounged threaded
rod and "nut" from any of several sources.  Old cast-iron screw jacks
can be had for a song sometimes - usually rusted solid, but that's no
big deal if you have a forge or torch.  Wine presses, defunct vises,
etc., all use large threaded hardware.
