U pack it to dam it, soot the threads and cast it in place. 
U said it's a pos anyway, so nothing to lose. Brass is pretty tough and many
old post vises were repaired that way a hundred years ago. It's really not
that hard to do. Sounds like a proof of concept syndrome-(Chicken v possum.)

Steve is the expert; I just helped at a demo- I think the brass could be
melted in any heavy iron vessel in a gas or coal forge and poured in to form
the nut. Ron C
