That wasn't my point. I was trying to point out that many (most??)
people simply cannot afford the cost of hand-wrought art.
The WV example was the extreme end of the spectrum where people having
no money for anything that doesn't involve the next meal and other
basics is pretty much the norm. Respectable has nothing to do with it -
access to the means does. My neighbor, Monty, has his masters in
comparative theology from UPenn. One doesn't get much better than that
in terms of reputation. While he has a very fine set of sensibilities,
his means are meager. No haughty art in his life. No means, yet the
good eye is clearly there.
