Er, because I have a 40 gal. water tank that I can cut down to ca. 15
gal. and weld up, with maybe $25 in fittings if I don't find what I
need in my spare parts bin? And a boughten tank would cost me a
several hundred bucks? And I'd probably have to drive all
over Hell's half acre to find one that suited me?
What would you do?

Um, isn't it true that crud [1] that would be acceptable in a
furnace tank would/could cause problems with diesel injectors or
injector pumps?
Several guys have posted here who have portable diesel welders or
other diesel equipment. My total experience with diesel is to have put
a new glow plug in a mid-60s Mercedes. I have a lot to learn. I've
just met a neighbor who's a marine diesel mechanic and she's prepared
to (say) troubleshoot a 16 cylinder, umpty-HP gen set but doesn't seem
to know a lot about cobbling together (comparatively) little stuff in
the back yard.

[1] One them technical terms, y'know. Fine particles, scum, murky
glop, whatever.
