Still sounds iffy. That stone is a pretty effective heat sink.
Getting the lead/solder up to somewhere between 375 and 475 degrees F in 
a stone block with the possibility that there is even a bit of water 
down in that hole also sounds like a difficult and possibly dangerous 
way to spend an afternoon.

I'd drill as much out as I could and if it meant destroying the original 
wrought iron pin I'd live with it and fabricate a new one.
