Yes, it works pretty well unless you need real precision.  It is semi-self-centering because the work piece is spinning instead of the drill bit.

Actually, the best solution was the two chuck alternative mentioned
before.  Serves as the fixture.  All you have to do is clamp the vise to
the table after everything is centered up correctly.  This is an old
trick but my addled mind... well, you know.
