The docks I've seen that were built with barrels as floats were tall
and unstable. How tall is the gunwale of your boat? Wind and weather
can pummel a boat pinched under a dock. Foam would sit lower but it
does get eaten up after a while. A plastic barrel won't. Maybe
weighting it down the barrel with fresh water would help with
stability. Works on ships and such.
