Kasenit when properly applied (work in a container filled so that the
kasenit covers the work on all sides) and heated to 1650 F hardens to
a depth of .005" in 15 min.
A quick dip in the powder and a few minutes back in the fire results
in a case depth of probably less than .001" this is not going to work
for a file.
Kasenit is potassium ferrocyanide K4-Fe-(CN6) and sodium ferrocyanide
C6-Fe-N6-Na4 . Lots of carbon and nitrogen available to harden the
steel and the potassium and sodium act to accelerate the process.
BTW It is touted as a safe non poisonous product but don't allow it
to come into contact with any acid or you will get hydrogen cyanide
gas and you don't want to be around when that happens.
