Today's crap files are case-hardened. Good files are through-hardened
in molten lead. The lead prevents oxidation in the same way salt baths
work. I am not certain why lead is used in preference of salts, but I
suspect that salt will rapidly attack the extremely fine cutting edges,
resulting in a less sharp product.
