I guess the main problem would be how to "turn them off" when you don't want the metal to move.

along the same line,   I have seen various size ball bearings,  probably 1"
to maybe 2" diameter, each one set in a cup/receiver that can be screwed
down.   Lay out a grid with these and the sheet metal will move whichever
direction you want.  pipe rollers might be somewhat unidirectional.

Sorry, don't know where to get them,  just know that they exist as I have on
occasion run across such items in a couple of different sizes.    also vague
memory: might have seen them in a wood working catalog.
