Could they be hollow steel, and filled with shot or sand, through the taped
hole? That is one thing to look for. The other is cast iron balls made for
ore crushers, but I don't they go quite that big, more like 2 inch to may 2
1/2.

No joke, I have a project that involves them. I have been commissioned to
make a line of colonial bridge arm lamps. I can fabricate or source all the
parts I need excpet one troublesome little rascal. It is a cast iron ball
about 3" OD, tapped for say 1/4 20F or 1/4 IP. I have posted a picture in
the album titled "Lamp Parts" at the photo access site. It serves as a
ballast weight at the base of the lamp No electrical funstion, no structural
finction, just dead weight to lower center of gravity and add stabilioty.
Any ideas on a source for a source?
