Peter,
I guess you will have to see what price you get. But when ordering tool
steel you don't use as much as when you are doing art or architectual stuff.
The key to getting a good price on tool steel is to stay away from precision
ground since you are going to forge it any way. 4140 is not exactlly an
exotic like d2, h13 or s7. You may also ask your supplier what they have
that would be close to 1045, though you did say they suggersted 1018 so
maybe they don't get it.
We have delt with Admiral Steel in Chicago and they seem willing to work
with you on small orders. They handle a lot of the knife makers and will
ship UPS. They also will send you the spec. sheets on the steels they have
in stock.
I have heard that Ford Steel in St. Louis will sell tool steel drops at a
good price but you have to go to their shop.

Thanks Rob. I put in a quote request on 4140. Isn't that a chrome-molly
alloy? Should I be prepared for sticker shock when the quote comes back?
