Ha! You beat me to it.
In the very first year I heated with wood, fresh out of collitch, I
proudly hauled home a load of elm, a whole tree already sawn into
stove-length bolts and free for the hauling. I was already the owner
of a shiny, late-model axe with few miles on it. Ho ho ho...
ho.....hum. Um... Yeahhhhhhh.
I now split around 5 cord of firewood a year by hand. With a 6- or
7-pound maul. None of it is elm. The hardest are gnarly chunks of
beech. Oak is always the easiest to split.
