Ha!  You beat me to it.

In the very first year I heated with wood, fresh out of collitch, I
proudly hauled home a load of elm, a whole tree already sawn into
stove-length bolts and free for the hauling.  I was already the owner
of a shiny, late-model axe with few miles on it.  Ho ho ho...
ho.....hum. Um... Yeahhhhhhh.

I now split around 5 cord of firewood a year by hand.  With a 6- or
7-pound maul. None of it is elm.  The hardest are gnarly chunks of
beech.  Oak is always the easiest to split.
