[TheForge] vinegar etch

Actually, I made a garden trowel for a friend's
birthday. One of a
 kind,
that's for sure! The pattern isn't that pronounced-
sort of a soft
 pebbly
look, kind of like fruitcake or a rocky beach- but
hard to see even
 after
etching in vinegar for days.
It kind of acted like pretty good steel, certainly way
harder than a36-

didn't seem bad to weld up at all, but 'tool' steel
does weld a little

easier than 'mild'.
Thanks- next some saw chain.

Andy,
how does a vinegar etch differentiate the steels
compared to ferric chloride?
and do you have any images of the trowel?
Lee
