But the drive is toward that. Whether we end up that way is still an
open question. There are some crazy people out there who appear to
sincerely believe that a future as a service economy is a good one.

Well, I do too, but there is a large contingent of presumably well
meaning people whose ideas are hurting us. This is undeniable. The USA
moves further from laissez faire capitalism daily. It is not a good thing.
