>From what I see the biggest energy loss on a treadle hammer is the way the 
dies are mounted.  At least on mine which was made from the Clay Spencer 
plans about 15 years ago.  We have a solid steel anvil, but then suspend the 
dies on 2 pieces of 1" round welded to a 4"x4" plate that is about 5/8" 
thick.  How much is lost there?  I think that the system used on the new 
tire hammer units is pretty good but the old treadle hammers wasted a lot of 
the anvil mass.
