Not to add to the confusion but the centrifugal switch located within
the motor functions as Paul stated, also a motor starter is a box
mounted on the wall which has special fuses in it to sense any excessive
starting current, protecting the motor from trying to start a load that
is excessive , due to age, locked-up or whatever. When using larger
motors I would suggest this as a safety device...
