Mark, I have been working with nothing but stainless since about 98,
and it is absolutely possible to bend it cold- but it is a bit harder
than mild.
I bend up to about 3/4" or so solid cold on my hossfeld daily, and I
do occasionly go thicker- up past 1", I usually do it hot.
You can usually bend stainless the same way you bend mild, but expect
it to be about 30% harder.
Sheet metal brakes derate by 2 gages for stainless.
I bend ss pipe a lot with the hossfeld too- and thats similar to mild
pipe, a bit harder, but not impossible.
I would advise against aluminum- unless you have it anodized after
bending, it will oxidise eventually. It gets white scum or powder on it.
But it sure is easier to bend.

I've got a job to bend a shower curtain rod for a customer. Since the
rod is going to get scratched by the curtain rings and exposed to a
lot of moisture, I'm thinking of making it out of stainless or
aluminum instead of powdercoated steel (my usual medium). Any
thoughts? How difficult is it to bend stainless or aluminum? Can I do
it cold?
Thanks,
Mark
