One of the Abana conferences- I think it was La Crosse- had a big
exhibit of real pieces of his work, along with a video.
He was great.
My wife did a project in Milwaukee, probably at least ten years ago,
and she did quite a bit of research on older metalwork there- she
ended up using a lot of pieces the city had removed, but that
employees had "tucked away" because they couldnt bear to see it
tossed- no Colnik work, but old cast iron parts and pieces, stone, and
so on.
In the time she was there, she met a guy who is a one man urban
preservation squad in Milwaukee- he lived in a huge old mansion he
bought for peanuts in a bad neighborhood, and it was full of parts of
buildings he saved as they were being torn down. He had several very
large Colnik pieces, fences and rails. His 3rd floor ballroom was so
full of building parts that you could not walk in it, and his other
8000sq ft or so, along with his huge yard, was also stacked to the
gills with wood, metal, glass and stone.
Milwaukee was once one of the wealthiest cities in america, and the
germans who lived there built magnificent homes and businesses. Too
bad, in the 60's and 70's, a lot was torn down without a thought- the
wife also has a great book of milwaukee architecture photos, with lots
of gems that are gone.
