You can weld heavier sections with the smaller migs but you need to pre 
heat the area and use multiple passes. I would pre heat the area to about 
250 - 300, do a root pass and then build stringer passes in from the sides. 
Several even passes and if possible keep it out of the wind or what ever 
way you have that is handy or can do to slow cooling won't hurt at all
