An additional influence in terms of a static load forcing the 
butt end of the stake back into the swage block is often helpful 
in this sort of thing. Some heavy chain on either end of a stout 
cross member fastening the cross member to the sides of the block 
gives the jack something to push against.
Then keep oiling and tapping, heating and cooling...applying and 
releasing pressure............Sooner or later it'll change its 
mind and leggo.           pf
