Looking back on some maintenance experience with very large roll end pods
that got stuck we always found that hydraulic jacks worked better then
hitting it. We would wrap the shaft with copper tubing and run cold water
through that and then heat the hell out of the pod itself with big burners.
At the same time applying lots of hydraulic force. One key was to heat as
fast as possible to have the outside get up to temperature without giving
lots of time for heat to transfer to the shaft. Moved some big press fits
this way that had internal gauls. (24 inch dia shafts).
