I'd forget the ultrasound.  I don't see that the typical setup will do 
what you want.  I may be wrong, but that is my impression.  You are 
talking about a large expense in any event.  Just lube it, heat it, and 
smack the shit out of it with a mallet.  Someone wisely suggested to 
verify that the anvil is not welded or brazed in.
	
	You could also try to press it out hydraulically.  A manual press
would 
be handy in this case.  Slow and precisely controlled pressure.  If the 
tang is inclined to move at all, the press should made short work of it, 
short of having been shrunk on.  Do you have photo images?
