I have used 12" dia spiral duct, galvanized. It is 22 ga. If I recall
correctly. This duct starts above a side draft hood. It never gets hot
enough to affect the galvanized coating.

It sounds like you also need to be thoughtfull of the buildings next
to you, top of the flue should be above highest roof line. of course
most of us don't have anybody that close as to block air flow, but we
do need to worry about clearing our own roof line. The inspector here
is talking about 12 inch flue which will be harder to find. any
thoughts on what gauge for the flue pipe?
