Don,
I think you misunderstood. They're not talking about
a SCBA. They're talking about a "supplied-air" system.
Imagine taking your welding mask and extending it in
all directions with a fairly air-impermiable "cloth" -
which hung down your torso on all sides for some
distance. Now bring a breathing-air supply into it,
near your mouth and nose. All the air around your
face is breathable. It's like you're in a little
positive pressure room. Much simpler than SCBA.
