It has been almost 20 years since I lived in the Quad Cities but I think 
there is an active local group that meets in or around the Scott County Park 
and the historical village there. (Iowa side).  Might give a call to the 
park office.

You might also check out the Illinois Valley Blacksmith Association. 
website www.illinoisblacksmith.org  Bud Harvey from Chillicothe, IL is the 
president.  309 579 2007   I think that the IVBA has done some things with 
the John Deere site close to the QC.  Bud may well know who you could talk 
to on coal.
