I can't think of the name right now, but there is a group that shows up
at the Vista Farm and Tractor show and does blacksmithing. They should
be able to set your friend up. They are all members of the California
Blacksmiths Association, too.

The only other suggestion I could think of is to search for
metallurgical-grade coal/coke. Places that test oil sometimes sell
metallurgical-grade coke that's a byproduct of the testing process.
Maybe someone else on the list can say more...
