Great pix, Mike. Thanks it looks pretty close to the one Ben Barret
linked to on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLIbObCltfQ.
Certainly close enough for my period repro requirements. A couple
questions, if you know. First, I can't quite see the return spring, but it
looks like its hooked to a lever off the main axel to the smiths left and
behind the hammer mount. I wonder if its adjustable for different weight
hammers. In the film, it looks like the smith has a return stop on the
treadle that holds the hammer at about 45 degrees from vertical while
working, then releases to let the hammer swing up and out of the way. the
control for this stop appears to be mounted on the right side of the anvil
block, and may be variable to control the strength of the hammer blow.
The oliver in the film also seems to be attached to the anvil by a shaft
passing through the anvil and holding the bick where the weld is finished at
the near edge. (I wonder if this hole can be added to an anvil)
The hardy tool is almost certainly used for the initial bend in the link:
same size material as the chain. The hammer head holds a top tool and
appears to be used exclusively for finishing the weld. The film shows the
smith doing the weld itself soley with the had hammer, and the oliver hammer
meeting the welded bend after the weld is stuck.
Thanks so much for these pics. This appears to be a good solution.
Something I can build myself to authentic period standards. Mike: do you
have contact info for Jim? I would like to get a few measurements and and
maybe more detail pics if possible.
Peter
