The use of the term "Oliver" for old treadle hammers was based on the
hammers from the chain making trade in England where they were named for
Oliver Cromwell "The Hammer". Most of the chain makers were women and the
"Oliver" was their striker. Men made the very large chain but women made
tons and tons of chain for the Royal Navy and other industries.
I think there is an very old treadle hammer at the Saugus Iron Works in MA
not tool far from Peter.
