I think either the lever or the wheel was the greatest invention..... probably the lever.

I'd have to say the greatest technological advance was agriculture
(including animal husbandry).  This made possible the establishment of
specialist classes from blacksmiths to politicians.  No longer were people
forced to move and not be able to create the institutions dependent on
stability of place.  The rest is history.  Grant
