Some historians would say that the greatest invention was the railroad --
for the first time man could move faster than the speed of a horse (or
sailing ship). The electric light did change many many things -- it gave us
24 hour work, around the clock industries and shift work. I not suggesting
we go back, but it is interesting to think about things without it. In the
16th and early 17th centuries the highest technology area was in sailing
combat ships of the day. Really very advanced when you think about them.
