hello mike;
the solution was right in front of me.
the paper models i had made showed the
solution. your comment below caused the
light bulb to finally go on .
i have made a new drawing to explain the
solution.

the outside crease is made with a blunt chisel on the outside
of the pan. the inside crease is made using the pan and box hand
brake. as the long edge is being folded up the short edge also
needed to fold up so that the folded corner would be made. with
the outside crease the short edge folds up nicely to form the
folded corner. the resulting tab is then folded over onto the
short side with a small ball-pein hammer.
