[TheForge] charcoal question

Too bad you guys can't come to Florida and clean several miles of fence row
for me. You can make your charcoal as you run the forge: just cut the wood
into chunks appx 2x2x4" and lay it on the side around the fire. As it coals,
just rake it into the fire and replace it as you go. The blacksmiths at
Mission San Louis can only use charcoal in a clay forge and that's how they
do it. Oak lasts longer than pine, and will melt steelpdq.

I've wondered about this more than once. Those trees take forever to
grow and it seems we are consuming them quite rapaciously.
