Cat urine. If he has a cat, or has a friend with one, have him acquire
the contents of a used litter box, solid lumps strained out, and
scatter the used litter on the piece. Dampen it down occasionally, and
in a few days, it should look quite pitted and rusted. Can be done in
a garage as long as it doesn't freeze hard ;-)
