I find that a pellet gun pumped up about 20x works quite well to solve the
problem when we get them falling down the chimney into our basement.
... Yeah, we got the 'advice' from the local cop shop "use a live trap and
take them back outside. They'll go home."
I was also told the same thing when we had a possum stuck in one of our
recycling bins... Found out that a pellet gun doesn't work real well on
them that time, so I had to resort to chemical warfare... That thing had
been hanging around for 4 months, bold as you please!
After asking a bit more about that sort of thing from the cops I was told
they can't do anything about critters like that.
I'm beginning to wonder, What are we paying them for, anyway?

Tree rats, they will eat or chew on anything and everything. they will
drink the sap eat the bark and the seeds from maples. They are also
like homing pidgins if you do not remove them far enough the will
return within a day or two. Took one 6 miles that was chewing into the
house to get rid of him, can't just shoot em where I live. My mothers
neighbour was taking em out to the park, 2 miles away, and they all
came right back even though the park is full of oaks. He marked there
tails with orange pant so knows it was the same rats.
