[TheForge] OT: Squirrels and maple sap?

squirrels in my backyard are exhibiting a behavior I hadn't previously
observed. I see them hanging on the sides of the trunk and the
undersides of the branches of my red maple in my backyard. I can't
really see what they're doing, but they act as if they're gleaning
something. It occurred to me that the sap may be rising. If they had
the brains, they could tap the sap for the sugar. Their teeth are
certainly up to scoring the bark. I wonder whether that's what
they're doing. I haven't gotten close enough to tell. Anyone ever
   see behavior like this?
