OK, Rich, a librarian friend posted the following:
I suspect that it might be a dangle spit. See Rachel Field's Irons in
the Fire. 1984.
He may have access to the book in the UK. I bought it while we lived there.
Or suggest that he send the photos to the V&A and ask them.
