I will not presume to speak for Jim, but from my POV it does both. The
work is very striking from the most superficial aspects - that attracts
the eye of the uninitiated - those to whom the site should be primarily
targeted. But anyone with an art metal background will also be drawn to
this work, especially if they hold any familiarity with the metals in
question. That Jim & Co have figured out how to join reactive metals
such as titanium, niobium, and tantalum on a commercial basis is a
technological advance that may have value beyond their immediate circles.
So Jim, I might recommend you investigate this potential as well. You
can license the process under strict NDA. You might make a bloody
fortune with that. I'm dead serious. Consider the potential for the
nuclear industry - cladding stainless pressure vessels with Nb would be
a very valuable technology if your method is superior to those used. In
fact, I believe the current practice is to use pure Nb, rather than clad
stainless. IIRC the Nb serves as a neutron sink, slow neutrons being
the nasty little buggers that they are.
FWIW,
-Andy
