[TheForge] insurance

I would start, if only for a reference point, by going to your current agent
and asking about a BOP (business owner's policy) for a "home occupation".
If you run a solid fuel forge, the writer will be very confused about how to
treat it, as there is no provision in the universal building code for it and
therefore no industry designation, and insurance writers, like fire
marshals, make up things to sundtitute for it. When I got mine recently, I
decribed it as essentially an indoor charcoal grill or coal grate, a type of
fireplace common around here. Do not, under any circumstances use the term
"forge". Since it is undefined in the codes, writers usually substitute
"blast furnace" or "foundry" or whatver comes to mind for it. "Coal stove"
works. Metalworking, heat treating, even welding are better than "forge" or
"blacksmith". describe the essence of what you do, don't use labels that
do not have accurate definintions in the codes. They just allow imaginations
to run wild.
Once you have a quote (mine runs about 1000 a year in a commercial setting,
not home occupancy) you will have either a good deal or a point of
comparison for any other sources you may find.
Good luck.
