Guess I haven't been paying attention.  For other Old Geezers who
remember Slim Spurling and also haven't been paying attention, Slim
"passed from this physical earth plane" last year.

My very first big blacksmithing conference was the 1976 one at
Carbondale.  Slim did a demo with such great showmanship as to upstage
nearly everybody else, including folks who were far greater artists.
Or maybe I was just at an impressionable age. In any case, it was the
'76 conference that inspired me to move from a woodshed and gifte
shoppe work to a big shop and more interesting stuff.

That's the only time I ever met him and he's been out of smithing for
many years (and doing some very strange stuff.)  But there's no doubt
that he was a real character and a keen contributor to the smithing
renaissance
