Don Plummer asked about attaching a tinsmith's stovepipe mandrel to
the bench. There's now a pic of an original, from-the-factory
attachment widget at:

With marigolds at bottom and bergamot in bloom at upper right. Giant
thistle and lupin gone to seed at upper left. Sweet ciceley in
background.

I was correct that the shoulder on the widget is high enough that,
when the nut is tight, the mandrel can slide on back and forth. I
believe I made a shallow rectangular well in my previous workbench so
that I could optionally lock it down solidly. But that doesn't seem
to be the intent of the original design.

Now that I have, at great bother, a 4-strand, 7' electric fence around
a couple or three acres and the #@!!&**%# deer are no longer eating
the garden down to nubbins, maybe I can get back to the shop and
actually use the big 'ol hammer I'm so proud of.
