Well, I managed to open the splits up and smooshed acraglass into it. 
It is now tied up and setting.  I seem to have gotten the resin well 
into the crack... time will tell.  the original finish is intact all 
around, so perhaps oil infiltration has been minimal.  This isn't a big 
deal job.  I doubt the gun is worth more than $99 - this is a favor for 
a friend.  Once set, I will relieve the mating surface and hopefully the 
crack will not reopen.
