Right. Soda ash = sodium carbonate = washing soda.  (And Potash =
potassium carbonate)

Neat trick, though, if you can't find it:  Use baking soda in water,
heat on stove.  Starts to fizz - CO2 evolving.  What's left behind
when it stops fizzing is washing soda in (hot) water:

2 NaHCO3 => Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O

Washing soda solution has a significantly higher pH than baking soda
solution, and this is probably important for the dyeing operation.
However the pH can be controlled between by mixtures of the two.
