I saw Mark Pearce demonstrate his fluxless welding at
Ironfest several years ago. Started with a single
piece of half-inch square iron bar, cut it in half,
joined the two pieces with a fluxless weld and worked
the weld area down until it appeared as a single
smooth bar again. He explained that during his
blacksmithing training in England they were taught to
repair old ironwork with fluxless welds as flux would
seep out of the weld over time as a white "stain".

I've also seen the dvd of his demonstration in Mn
where he does the fluxless weld on the preheated
anvil. Same techinique both times. upset the ends,
scarf, heat with both scarfs down in the fire, remove
from the fire and snap the ends to remove particles
from the fire, put the scarfs together and hammer
lightly. He always works the weld area after that at
almost a welding heat.
