Recently we had a demonstrator in who used hydrated lime as his flux
Comes is 50# bags for the garden
Also just used a oxy/propane rosebud as the heat source no forge.
He was a very knowledgeable man.  Excellent at forging and showed head
straightening also

I add iron-steel to my borax. I get it by going to a garage that turns 
drums and rotors. They give it away. It's also good for helping roses bloom.
